Affordable Art Fair 2015
Hong Kong’s annual Affordable Art Fair is just one week away and it’s set to be the biggest yet. Thousands of artworks and artists from over 130 galleries will be showcasing the depth of Hong Kong talent and highlighting that art doesn’t have to break the bank. The aim of the Affordable Art Fair is to bring art into Hong Kong homes and this year the exhibition will feature an art home curated with over 50 artworks all for under $10,000 – proving that there’s room for art, whatever the budget.
With the fair jam-packed with art talks, workshops, demonstrations and live performances and a colourful artscape of sculptures, paintings, prints and photography pieces we wanted to highlight some of the key things to remember when thinking about adding to your collection.
All artists’ names, mediums and importantly prices are marked on each piece. Buying art is often about investing in an artist and starting a relationship with a gallery. To make the most of your experience a simple acronym is A.R.T. Ask questions, Respond to the work and Trust your instincts.
A – Ask questions. Ask about the artist’s background such as their education, stage of career, previous shows, awards and examples of previous work. Discover the artist’s inspiration, techniques and materials used to make the artwork. Also ask about how to hang, light and frame artwork.
R – Respond. How does the artwork make you feel – happy, nostalgic, amazed, fiery, curious or surprised? What do you see within the artwork that you connect with – colours, themes, topics, shapes?
T – Trust your instinct. Relax, refuel and review your artwork shortlist and decide whether the artwork feels right for you and your home.
