Neri & Hu Design and Research Office (NHDRO), the design firm responsible for redesigning Shanghai’s trendy The Waterhouse on the Bund, which opened in July, were awarded Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) annual Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award for 2010.

The award represents the latest in a string of international and regional accolades for the Shanghai based designers, whose previous projects include the renowned boutique hotel The Opposite House in Beijing and the China House restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok.

The philosophy behind the transformation of a dilapidated 1930s industrial building into one of Shanghai’s hottest boutique hotels was aimed at playing with the concepts of interior and exterior space – incorporating elements of old and new in the design – juxtaposing modern interior concepts against the external structure of the original building’s well-worn façade.
