An Olympic Plunge
London Aquatics Centre
Zaha Hadid’s London Aquatics Centre has just been completed, one year ahead of the 2012 Olympics – making it the last of the venues to be finished.
The building’s design is themed around fluid and waves – with a huge undulating roof slotted between two viewing decks. Post event, these decks will be removed and the structure will become a regular pool centre.
Costing a whopping £260m, the building’s expense has raised some eyebrows – especially as much of the structure is temporary – but nobody can deny that the architecture is second to none.
